Service Overview

A commercial panel swap is a logistics problem.

The electrical work on a 400A or 600A commercial panel replacement is not the hard part. The hard part is coordinating the utility, the inspector, the GC, the building owner, and every tenant in the building so the power-off window happens at the right time and the power comes back on schedule. We handle that coordination.

Common scenarios: an aging Federal Pacific or Zinsco commercial panel that the insurance carrier wants replaced (recall-class panels in commercial use are uninsurable in most carriers), a service capacity upgrade because the business has grown (300A panel feeding a tenant who now needs 400A), or a distribution panel addition where the existing main is fine but the downstream distribution needs expansion.

Most commercial panel replacements happen at night or over a weekend. The utility schedules a service disconnect for the window, we work, the inspector visits, the utility re-energizes. For multi-tenant buildings, we coordinate with property management on tenant notifications, freezer/refrigeration considerations, and IT-equipment shutdown sequencing.

For service upgrades that go beyond the existing service capacity (300A to 600A, single-phase to three-phase), we coordinate with the utility on service-entrance redesign — new mast, new meter base sized for the larger service, new feeder from the meter to the new panel, and the utility-side coordination on the larger transformer and drop.

What’s Included

Commercial panel scope.

Main panel replacement

Same-amperage replacement (e.g. existing 400A swapped for new 400A Square D / Eaton / Siemens commercial) or capacity upgrade with service-entrance redesign.

Distribution panel additions

Sub-panels added downstream of an existing main when load increases or new tenant space requires dedicated distribution. Code-compliant feeder sizing, proper grounding bond.

Service capacity upgrades

300A to 600A, 600A to 1200A, single-phase to three-phase conversions. Coordinated with the utility on transformer sizing, drop redesign, and meter base replacement.

Recall-class panel replacement

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco, Sylvania-Challenger commercial panels are uninsurable in most carriers and warrant proactive replacement. We handle the swap during occupied operation.

Utility + inspector coordination

Service disconnect request with TVA-LPC, scheduling around tenant operations, inspection at completion, utility re-energization — all managed by us.

Tenant notification + relocation

For multi-tenant buildings, we coordinate with property management on tenant notifications, freezer/refrigeration planning, and IT-equipment shutdown sequencing.

Common Questions

Five things we get asked every week.

How do you replace a commercial panel without shutting down the business?
Most commercial panel replacements happen at night or over a weekend. We coordinate with the utility for a service-disconnect window during off-hours, work straight through, and have the inspector visit before the business reopens. For multi-day capacity upgrades we coordinate with the tenant on what circuits stay live during transition.
How long does a commercial panel replacement take?
Same-amperage main panel swap: 10-16 hours typical (single overnight or weekend window). Capacity upgrade with service-entrance redesign: 2-3 weekend windows or a phased approach over multiple weeks. Distribution panel additions without main disruption: 2-3 day project.
My commercial panel is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco — do I need to replace it?
Most commercial insurance carriers in Tennessee now refuse to cover buildings with Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco, or Sylvania-Challenger panels — even commercial-grade variants. Proactive replacement before your insurance audit catches it is much cheaper than dealing with a non-renewal. Quote anytime.
Can you do single-phase to three-phase service conversions?
Yes. Three-phase service conversions involve utility coordination (transformer upgrade or new transformer), new service entrance and meter base, new distribution panel, and either rewiring existing loads to three-phase or keeping single-phase distribution downstream. Quoted per project; typically $15,000+ depending on scope.
What does commercial panel replacement cost?
Same-amperage commercial main replacement: $8,000-$25,000 depending on amperage (400A vs 1200A), accessibility, and whether the service entrance also needs replacement. Distribution panel additions: $3,500-$12,000. Service capacity upgrades with utility coordination: $25,000-$60,000+. Quoted per project with full itemization.
