Service Overview

200A is the new minimum.

Most homes built before 2000 in East Tennessee have 100A panels. Add an EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range, or a home office, and that 100A panel runs out of headroom. A 200A upgrade gives you the load capacity for everything you’re going to add over the next 30 years.

A panel upgrade is more than swapping a cabinet. We pull a load calc, size the service drop, coordinate the meter swap with the utility, and sequence the inspection so power comes back the same day. For most residential homes, that’s a one-day job from morning to dusk.

Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and Sylvania-Challenger panels are recall-class. Insurance companies in Tennessee are increasingly refusing to cover homes with them. If your panel is one of those three, an upgrade isn’t optional — it’s the path to keeping your homeowner’s policy.

We also run a full diagnostic on every existing panel we touch: torque every lug to spec, check breaker temperatures with an IR camera, label every circuit, and document the work for your inspector and your insurance carrier.

What’s Included

Five things included on every panel upgrade.

Full load calculation

We pull a load calc per NEC 220 to size the panel correctly — not just “200A because that’s what everyone gets.” HVAC, EV, induction, and well pump are all factored in.

200A service rebuild

New panel cabinet, new bus bars, new breakers, neat conductor routing. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and Sylvania-Challenger panels replaced under recall-class protocol.

Whole-home surge protection

A Type 2 SPD ($300-$600) installs at the panel and clamps spikes from the utility before they hit your devices. Recommended on every upgrade.

Sub-panel installation

Garage sub-panels for EV charging or workshop, basement sub-panels for finished space, detached structure sub-panels with proper grounding.

Permit + inspection coordination

We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, walk it through. You don’t make a single phone call to a government office.

Documentation + handoff

You get a labeled circuit directory, the inspector’s sign-off, and a panel photo set for your records and your insurance carrier.

Open 200-amp panel upgrade with neatly run wiring

Three other electricians quoted me for the panel upgrade and ghosted on the install date. Volt Pro showed up at 7:30am, finished by 4, and labeled every breaker neatly. The kind of work I’d brag about if I were the contractor.

Common Questions

Five things we get asked every week.

How do I know if my electrical panel needs replacing?
Three signs: (1) breakers tripping for no apparent reason, (2) panel feels warm to the touch, (3) it’s a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Sylvania-Challenger panel. Those brands are recall-class and most insurance companies won’t cover homes with them. Most 100A panels in homes built before 2000 are also undersized for today’s electrical load.
What does a 200A panel upgrade cost in East Tennessee?
For a typical residential service rebuild we quote $2,400 to $4,800 depending on panel location, meter swap requirements, and whether the service drop needs replacing. Commercial work is quoted per scope. The quote is itemized so you see exactly where the dollars go.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
Most residential 200A upgrades are a one-day job, morning to dusk. Power is off for 4-6 hours during the actual swap. We coordinate the meter pull and meter set with the utility, and the inspection is typically next-day for residential.
Will my power be off during the upgrade?
Yes, for the duration of the actual panel swap (typically 4-6 hours). We pre-stage everything beforehand and work as fast as code allows. For temperature-sensitive scenarios (medical equipment, fish tanks, etc.) we coordinate around the outage window.
Do you handle permits and inspections?
Yes. We pull every permit, coordinate with the county inspector, and walk the inspection. You don’t make a single phone call to a government office. The inspector’s sign-off and documentation come to you at job completion.
