The case for a $350 to $650 device gets clearer when you inventory what it protects. A heat pump control board runs $400 to $1,200 replaced. A refrigerator board, $300 to $600. The washer, the dryer, the dishwasher, and the microwave all carry boards now. Add televisions, computers, a thermostat, garage door openers, and whatever smart devices live on your network, and a typical Knoxville home has $15,000 to $30,000 of electronics exposed to the service entrance.

How an SPD Is Built and Why Ratings Differ

Inside a surge protective device are metal oxide varistors, components that conduct only when voltage spikes past their threshold, dumping the excess to ground. Each event they absorb wears them slightly. That is why the surge current rating matters: a 40 kA device and a 100 kA device may clamp the same single event, but the higher-rated device survives many more events before it sacrifices itself. In a high-lightning region, the bigger number is endurance, and endurance is what you are buying.

The status indicator is the other piece worth understanding. When the MOVs inside have absorbed their last event, the device stops protecting and the indicator changes. An SPD with a dead indicator is a spent cartridge still bolted to the panel. Glance at it when you change smoke detector batteries, and have it replaced when it shows spent. Protect the Equipment You Just Paid For

The week a new HVAC system, a standby generator, or an EV charger goes in is the right week to add surge protection, and we say so on those jobs.
